Since 1985, The Guerrilla Girls – a group of feminist activist artists – have performed on almost every continent in the world. On Wednesday, Feb 22, the troop will gig in Milwaukee, where they join the MIAD Creativity Series from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Fourth Floor Raw Space of the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, 273 E. Erie St.
The event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.; large crowds are expected.
The group wears gorilla masks to obscure their identities so audience members focus on issues in the art world instead of the performers. Their goal is to expose gender and racial bias and corruption through facts, humor and outrageous visuals.
When the group originally formed in 1985, they printed provocative posters calling out major museums with collections that were almost entirely created by male artists. More than 30 years later, the numbers have only insignificantly increased and the Guerrilla Girls not only question the art world, but also film, politics and more.
Their public presentation at MIAD will include music, video of their work and a discussion of discrimination in a variety of art forms. A Q&A will follow the event, which is sponsored by Katie Heil, Madeleine Lubar and the Bert L. and Patricia S. Steigleder Charitable Trust.
"We undermine the idea of a mainstream narrative by revealing the understory, the subtext, the overlooked and the downright unfair," the Guerrilla Girls said in a statement.
The group recently appeared on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert."
