Starting this fall, OnMilwaukee will bring a new approach to its theater coverage, looking at the world on stage from some fresh, new and exciting angles and perspectives. In the meantime, while we're on the topic of different approaches to theater, coming soon to the Brew City, Gibraltar Jazz Club – located at 538 W. National Ave. in Walker's Point – is bringing together a whole handful of beloved Broadway shows for a night worth belting to the rafters about.
On Saturday, Aug. 26, the jazz club will play host to The 5 Musicals Masquerade, a night dedicated to celebrating five iconic productions – "Rent," "Grease," "Les Miserables," "Hamilton" and, the event's namesake, "The Phantom of the Opera" – playing each of the classic shows in their entirety throughout the evening.
"Many of us have theater backgrounds and can appreciate these songs, so much so that some of them have been a part of the soundtrack of some our best memories," notes Gibraltar's Facebook invite.
It wouldn't be a proper theater evening, however, without costumes and getting into character, so Gibraltar encourages guests to "get dressed up and be mysterious" (it IS a masquerade, after all) with heels, ties and capes. The Gibraltar Gallery side of the space will also be open to the public during The 5 Musicals Masquerade for lounging and most likely a good amount of singing along to some of the biggest hits from the Broadway stage.
The evening starts at 9 p.m. and runs until 1 a.m. – including a champagne toast at midnight complete with Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "We Are the Champions," which aren't from any musicals in particular but are just great sing-a-long songs, so they get a pass.
So don't throw away your shot to sing, dance or just plain savor the supreme sounds of the stage – just in time for the start of the local theater season!
As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.
When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
