Tonight is Gallery Night, and my interest is deeply piqued by "Gene and Joan in Lodi, etc." which is an installation of slides curated by Susie Seidelman and Anna Helgeson. The show is supported by the UWM Peck School of the Arts.
"The show is an installation of a dozen projectors staged in an old East Side apartment, running simultaneously," says Susie Seidelman. "The slides are all snapshots taken by amateur photographers between 1940 and the early '70s, all purchased at estate sales or thrift stores. There will be over one thousand slides on display during the show."
The apartment is in the building at 2007 N. Prospect Ave. and will be open to the public from 8 to 11 p.m.
Seidelman has been collecting slides for over 10 years and is often moved by the humanity in the images.
"I was looking through some of the very last slides. These were from a new family whose images I hadn't seen before. There was something about this particular family's photos that made me fall completely in love with them. The amount of tenderness I felt toward these strangers, from shots taken 50 years ago, was remarkable," she says.
"The love they portrayed for their pets and their home and their everyday lives together was just so, I don't know, special. It was very moving, and I felt honored to have experienced that – and thankful to them."
