Flooding has caused a number of closures on parts of the state's freeway system, forcing those traveling for the weekend into some fairly long detours.
The closure that could have the biggest impact on Milwaukee drivers is on westbound I-94 at Hwy. 83. Originally, traffic was being diverted off the freeway at Hwy. 26 in Johnson Creek, but the flooding that caused that closure has also impacted the original detour route.
The state Department of Transportation suggests motorists heading from the Milwaukee are to Madison go south on Hwy. 83 through Delafield, Wales and Mukwonago to I-43; taking I-43 south to Beloit then taking I-39/90 North to Madison.
If you're heading further north than Madison to the Dells or beyond, things get even trickier. High water on the Baraboo River has closed portions of northbound I-39/90/94 beginning at U.S. 151 on Madison's northwest side. The freeway is closed up to Portage, where the freeways split.
Southbound traffic on I-90/94 is now being diverted off the freeway at Hwy. 12 in Lake Delton. Widespread flooding in south-central Wisconsin has made finding an alternate route a problem.
The DOT has created a Web site with all current closures in the state.
