September is Hunger Action Month, the Feeding America network’s national campaign to raise awareness and incite action on the issue of hunger in the United States. Local chapter Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin is amping up its battle against hunger.
Founded in 1979, Feeding America is headquartered in Chicago. However the local branch, Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, 1700 W. Fond du Lac Ave., was launched in 1982 as America’s Second Harvest. It is rooted here in the community and helps to battle hunger in 36 counties in eastern Wisconsin and is its own organization.
In fact, Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin partners with 600 members in 36 Eastern WI counties and they have 387 members located in Milwaukee County alone.
Did you know that one in seven people across these counties is facing hunger? This is in urban communities and in rural ones, too. This, despite the fact that Wisconsin has more than enough food to feed everyone in the state. Learn more here.
With food banks in Milwaukee and the Fox Valley, Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin works with members and partners to help ensure that no child, adult or senior ever goes hungry.
Our Farm Link program works with schools, hospitals and other buyers of local food and connect them with some of the best local farmers in the area. On Thursday, Sept. 18, Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin worked with hunger-relief advocates to focus efforts on a single day to really create a big impact.
But the work continues throughout Hunger Action Month, and, of course, beyond.
To help do its work this month Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin has teamed with Compeer Financial. But they need your help, too. For every dollar you donate, Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin can serve three meals.
How can you help?
First, follow Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to learn about the communities it serves and the work it does there.
Then, lead by example: volunteer, advocate, take part in Feeding America events and donate. You can learn more about how to get involved at the Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin website.
Then, show others that they can be a part of the solution, too, by posting a photo of yourself volunteering at a local pantry or one of Feeding America’s food banks, using the hashtags #HungerActionMonth and #SolvingHungerLocally and tag @FeedAmericaWI.
