Bye-bye, birdies and baby rattles. Jenny Hart takes embroidery to a new level by stitching ornate pop culture portraits.

Hart's work is on display at Paper Boat Boutique and Gallery, 2367 S. Howell Ave., from Friday, Oct. 21 to Wednesday, Nov. 30. Gallery Night (October 21) hours are noon to 10 p.m.

Hart began working in embroidery in the summer of 2000. Since then, her lavishly embroidered portraits have appeared in exhibitions and publications throughout Europe, South America, Mexico and Japan.

Her collection includes stitchings of stars such as Iggy Pop, Marianne Faithfull and Detroit's White Stripes. Hart's work has also appeared as illustrations for magazines such as BUST, Nylon and Venus, and hangs in the Roger Miller Museum as well as the homes of actress Carrie Fisher, comedian Tracey Ullman and Elizabeth Taylor.

Hart is also the founder of Sublime Stitching (Hip Patterns and Kits for Crafters) and the author of Stitch-It Kit (Chronicle Books).

Paper Boat Boutique and Gallery opened June 19 in the Bay View neighborhood. Co-owners Faythe Levine and Kim Kisiolek sell wares made by independent designers, crafters and artists from Milwaukee and beyond.

"Each item is hand-crafted, making it literally one-of-a-kind, and nothing we sell has a major label," says Levine.
