The Brewers announced the signings of their first five draft selections from the 2013 First-Year Player Draft.

The signings today were:

Oshkosh native Josh Uhen, a round five pick from UWM, is a right-handed pitcher who has been assigned to Arizona. At the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Uhen, 21, made 21 appearances out of the bullpen for the Panthers in his redshirt sophomore season this year. Uhen compiled a 1-0 record with a 3.80 ERA in 21.1 innings with 19 strikeouts in 2013.

Right-handed pitcher Devin Williams taken in the second round. Williams, 18, went 6-1 with a 1.02 ERA and one save in nine games as a senior at Hazelwood West (MO) High School. He struck out 93 batters and allowed just 17 hits over 48 innings pitched in 2013, limiting opponents to a .102 batting average.

Williams, who was a Rawlings/Perfect Game Preseason First-Team All America selection, had a scholarship offer from the University of Missouri. Williams has been assigned to Arizona.

Shortstop Tucker Neuhaus, drafted out of  Wharton (FL) High School and assigned to Arizona.

Neuhaus, who turns 18 years old tomorrow, missed the majority of the season due to injuries. He was drafted by the Brewers in the Competitive Balance Round B and had a scholarship offer from the University of Louisville.

Right-handed pitcher Barrett Astin, drafted in round three from the University of Arkansas, has been assigned to Helena.

Astin, 21, went 4-4 with a 1.79 ERA and one save in 18 games (14 starts) at the University of Arkansas this past season. In 90.2 innings, he struck out 74 batters and allowed 85 hits, including just one home run. Astin spent the 2012 season as the Razorbacks closer (11 saves in 2012).

Fourth round pick Taylor Williams, a right-handed pitcher from Kent State University.

Williams, 21, was a First Team All-MAC selection in his junior campaign at Kent State University this season. He led the Golden Flashes with a 10-1 record and a 2.47 ERA in 15 starts, including three complete games. Williams struck out 110 batters in 105.2 innings pitched this season. Williams has been assigned to Helena.

 

The Brewers are expected to announce additional draft signings later this week.

The advanced rookie-level Helena Brewers begin their season this Thursday at the Missoula Osprey, the rookie affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. The rookie-level Arizona Brewers open their season on Thursday at the Arizona Dodgers.
