{image1}After three years of negotiating, the Residents for Off-leash Milwaukee Parks (ROMP) finally got the answer it was waiting for when the airport director agreed to partner with the Milwaukee County Parks Department and offer a dog exercise area adjacent to General Mitchell International Airport.
Currently, the county only has one dog park on the border of Menomonee Falls and Milwaukee.
"The addition of a dog park near the airport now means many residents have a more convenient location as well as a more safe, fenced in location to take their dogs," says Robin Barry, ROMP president.
The airport site, opening this summer, is over 20 acres and will include a separate small dog area along with a double-gated entrance. ROMP benchmarked both features as essential for a dog park.
Supervisors McCue, Cesarz and Dimitrijevic, who have been supportive of the group's efforts to establish additional dog parks in their districts and throughout the county, presented the resolution between the parks and the airport.
ROMP initially proposed a system of off-leash, fenced-in dog parks throughout Milwaukee County and hope the county will continue to identify additional sites, specifically on the East Side and a more centralized location in the city.
"Milwaukee County needs several new dog parks to accommodate the large number of residents with dogs, and our group sees the approval of this site as the big step in establishing a system of fenced-in, off-leash dog exercise areas," says Barry.
