Concordia University Wisconsin (CUW) will celebrate its new baseball facility and first official home game on campus under the new lights.

The game will be on Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Carthage as part of an event known as "Concordia Under the Lights."

The President of Concordia University and the great grandson of the first CUW pitcher, Dr. Patrick Ferry, will handle the ceremonial first pitch honors before the game, meant as a way to reenact the 1912 game in Milwaukee highlighted in historic pictures.

ESPN Radio in Milwaukee will be on hand to do a live broadcast marking occasion.

"CUW students and staff will line up outside the field boundaries as this game marks the 100 year tradition of baseball here at Concordia," said Director of Sports Information Rick Riehl.

The new state of the art facility, located on the northeast corner of CUW's campus, is equipped with synthetic turf similar to Concordia's football, soccer, and softball fields, which allows for proper drainage.

"Preparing the field to practice or play is now as simple as pulling the tarp off the pitcher's mound," said longtime head coach of CUW's Baseball Team, Val Keiper.

While the field is finished and being used by CUW, the final touches are being put on the remainder of Kapco Park which will be completed in time for the upcoming Lakeshore Chinooks season which begins on Monday, June 4.

The Chinooks are part of the Northwoods League, a wooden bat league for collegiate level players over the summer.

"The addition of the new baseball facility has provided CUW and the Mequon community a great source of civic pride," said athletic director, Dr. Rob Barnhill. "The facility has allowed our team to be the envy of our conference and non-conference opponents, building on our baseball heritage and attracting the players of the future."
