For the seventh straight year, October is Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com, presented by the restaurants of Potawatomi. All month, we're stuffed with restaurant reviews, delectable features, chef profiles and unique articles on everything food, as well as the winners of our "Best of Dining 2013."
At lunch today, I found the inspiration I needed to get motivated to watch the Major League Baseball playoffs.
I may be like you in that once the Brewers are out of it, my interest wanes. So, I need a touch point, positive story or local angle to bring me back to the game on a personal level. For this fan, it was a wonderful lunch at Buckley’s and specifically Mike Buckley, the owner of the restaurant at 801 N. Cass St. in Downtown Milwaukee.
Buckley is a Boston guy who, even after more than 30 years in Milwaukee, still lives and breathes Red Sox baseball. He and his sons also run one of Milwaukee’s best restaurants. Try the fish fry, clam chowder, sweet habanero plantain appetizer, lobster roll, Alaskan halibut and amazing carrot cake, and you’ll quickly agree with my assessment. For more on Mike Buckley, check out this recent profile that Stacey Vogel Davis from The Business Journal just did.
Back to baseball, though. I need a team to cheer for this fall, and my lunch today at Buckley’s solidified it. My team’s the Red Sox. Hearing the passion and stories from Mike Buckley set off something inside my sports fan heart. Boston fans care, much like Wisconsin sports fans, and probably even more so.
I love Buckley’s, and today the owner of this comfortable and always top notch Milwaukee restaurant reminded me why. Not only does he run an amazing community-building place that serves great food, he does it from the heart and a heart that’s family and sports driven.
Mike Buckley's fandom was contagious for me today. And since it's Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com, it's all the better that I say, "Let’s go Red Sox!"
