Thinking about bright blue beverages mostly conjures images of Icees and Kool-Aid Jammers, but Urban Beets Cafe – Wauwatosa offers a "superfood tonic" called the Blue Unicorn that proves sapphire refreshments and tooth-rot are not synonymous.
The Blue Unicorn is made with fresh ginger, lemon juice, agave and blue green algae, one of nature's most nutrient-rich foods. The contrast of flavors should clash, and yet, they don't. The agave calms the zing of the ginger and the zesty lemon juice. It even has a touch of sweetness – a taste that might be enhanced by the vision of the brilliant blue hue.
The drink is made with the customer's choice of almond, oat or coconut milk and costs just over $5.
Urban Beets has a variety of juices, smoothies and superfood tonics at two locations: 1401 N. Martin Luther King Dr. and 3077 N. Mayfair Rd. in Wauwatosa. The only mistake one could possibly make with a Blue Unicorn would be to look it up in the Urban Dictionary. That just doesn't sound mythically potable in the least.
Urban Beets' drink menus change. Please inquire that the drink is available prior to a visit.
