Department of Public Works approved Lime, Spin and Bird electric scooters will be legal in the city of Milwaukee. The Public Works committee approved them to return for a second study (trial period) after a first was conducted in 2019, according to an article posted by Urban Milwaukee.
The scooters will be available for rent via smartphones starting around June 1. Each company will offer up to 1,000 scooters throughout the city, but with a maximum of 100 scooters each in the Downtown area.
The biggest concern remains pedestrian safety because even though scooter riding on sidewalks is illegal, it happened often in 2019 and resulted in complaints. Thus, the following rules are in place: been
- Scooter users adhere to the same rules as bicycle riders, which excludes city sidewalks.
- Parking, however, is required to be on sidewalks that are more than five feet wide.
- To ensure proper use of scooters, specific intersections will enforce monitoring periods. If during these monitoring periods more than 10 percent of a company’s scooters are observed on the sidewalks the company will be banned from that area.
- Scooter riders must be 18 years of age.
