For the 10th straight year, October is Dining Month on OnMilwaukee, presented by the restaurants of Potawatomi Hotel & Casino. All month, we're stuffed with restaurant reviews, dining guides, delectable features, chef profiles and unique articles on everything food, as well as voting for your "Best of Dining 2016."
Cafe Hollander
Cafe Hollander won "best beer list in a restaurant" for the first time, beating out last year's winner, Stubby's Gastrogrub Beer Bar, 2060 N. Humboldt Ave. It's not a surprise, considering Café Hollander takes beer – well, "bier" – very seriously.
Each year, Hollander visits the breweries, monasteries and cobblestone streets of Belgium and Holland to locate rare and exclusive selections. The cafe's beer menu includes stouts, ales, dubbles, tripels, quadrupels, pilsners, Trappists, sours, wheats, blondes, gluten-free and more.
Runners up:
2. Milwaukee Ale House
3. Von Trier
4. Stubby's Gastropub Beer Bar
5. Drink Wisconsibly
Lori Fredrich's choice: Goodkind
Beer lists are getting better and better all the time across the city. So, this question is getting more and more difficult to answer. But, I still find myself to be in sync with the well curated beer list at Goodkind in a way I can’t quite explain. BJ Seidel has a great palate, and that shows in the thoughtful list which offers plenty of choices in styles and price-points. Plus, there’s always something interesting on tap.
This year we also asked a variety of prominent Milwaukeeans to weigh in on their pick for specific categories. For this category, we consulted Orey Laev, president of Ray's Wine & Spirits.
Laev's pick: Champps Americana, Brookfield
While Champps is known across the country as a sports bar chain with average pub grub, Champps in Brookfield has distanced itself from the others by leaps and bounds.
They have quietly come on the scene and done an outstanding job of keeping things fresh and interesting, while still managing to procure a number of rarities that keep all the beards coming to the yard.
Also the events, takeovers and programs such as the Banger Beer Club have proven to be immensely impressive. Kudos to Tony and Justin for morphing from underdog to big dog!
