For the eighth straight year, October is Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com, presented by Locavore, the newest restaurant at Potawatomi Hotel & Casino. All month, we're stuffed with restaurant reviews, delectable features, chef profiles and unique articles on everything food, as well as the winners of our "Best of Dining 2014."
Few restaurants have held the public’s palate for as long as Maharaja, as the eatery located at 1550 N. Farwell Ave. ran away and hid in this category for the eighth straight year. Maharaja secured nearly 28 percent of the total vote and more than doubled the total votes for runner up Taste of India.
A Milwaukee staple for nearly two decades, Maharaja continues to delight patrons with cuisine inspired by northern and southern India. It is a popular lunch spot (the buffet’s are a big draw), as are some of the dishes that come out of the Tandoor (clay oven), such as the Seekh Kabab (minced lamb with onions and spices) and Reshmi Kabab Lahsooni (chicken breast with cream, yogurt and spices). Don’t forget the rice Dosa (a fermented crepe) either!
Maharaja has eight entrée specialties, many with chicken or lamb, but also with vegetarian options. Look out for the Vindaloo, with your choice meat simmered in potatoes in a ginger and garlic sauce. There are five specialties to choose, which include lamb, goat, chicken and catfish, and a robust vegetarian menu.
After Taste of India easily secured its runner-up position, there was a spirited battle to settle the final three spots in the top five, as Kabana Grill, Café India and Tandoor were separated by just three votes.
