Some people go out to bars to socialize with friends. Some are looking to meet people. Others are looking to kick some butt in a little competitive sport. Whether it's pool, darts, dice or trivia questions, getting a friendly game going can be the difference between the same old, same old and a really fun night out -- especially if you're winning.
Milwaukee is a town that appreciates a good bar game (what else do we have to do all winter long?), so competition in this category was stiff. Club Charlies, a new addition to the Third Ward at 320 E. Menomonee St., emerged as the winner.
And while it doesn't have a pool table or an entire room dedicated to video games, it does have a killer trivia night.
Every week beginning at 7 p.m., Charlies bartender Colin Boynton hosts Taco Trivia Tuesday, in which he leads one of a handful of teams to trivial victory while promoting the bar's $5.99 taco platter special. Boynton makes up his own questions, rather than using generic Internet trivia. The games end around 9 or 10 p.m., and the winning team leaves with a $50 gift certificate; second place gets $25.
Co-owner Dawn Bloomfield says that despite the wall-to-wall crowd her trivia attracts each Tuesday, there is always room for more players. Or, if you don't feel like answering random questions, you could always play a round of darts or bar dice.
