Ten years ago, when Amy Seckinger bathed her first baby, she hated to see his lips quiver and hands ball into fists because he was cold. She decided to fix the problem, and created a product that comforts newborns during bath time.
Seckinger, who lives in Delafield, invented the Bath Luve, a 100-percent cotton “drape” that parents submerge in water and then place over their baby’s shoulders, torso and private parts to keep them warm and calm while they're in water.
“As an adult we would never want to take a bath in an inch or two of water. You would want to be completely submerged. But we all know for safety reasons, babies should only have an inch or two of water in their tub,” says Seckinger. "This makes them very cold."
Bath Luve comes in three different designs -- a duck, frog or fish -- and is ideal for babies age newborn to six months. Once the child is older, Bath Luve can drape over his or her shoulders.
The response to Bath Luve, so far, is positive. Seckinger first tried the product on her own kids, Austin and Ashlyn, and then tested it with focus groups comprised of mothers.
“All responses pointed to a hot seller,” says Seckinger. “One doctor who saw this said it 'brought the womb back to the bath.'”
The product retails for $6-10 and will be available in Kohl's Deartment Stores this spring, as well as the One Step Ahead catalog. It is currently available online, in select Baby Depots and Toys 'R Us Australia.
Seckinger knows that bath time can be very stressful, especially for new parents, and she hopes her product will decrease fussiness and make bath time more of a bonding experience.
“With Bath Luve, the crying stops and bath time is a really special time,” says Seckinger.
