The coronavirus pandemic has changed our everyday life, but it doesn't need to change who we are. So, in addition to our ongoing coverage of the coronavirus, OnMilwaukee will continue to report on cool, fun, inspiring and strange stories from our city and beyond. Stay safe, stay healthy, stay informed and stay joyful. We're all in this together. #InThisTogetherMKE
Jill Gilbert makes soaps, lotions, deodorants and candles under the business name, MootsSoap.
"Of everything I make, soap making is my top favorite," says Gilbert. "I combine the basic science of soap making and a bit of art with blending essential oils and fragrances to try to come up with new and different scents."
Gilbert particularly enjoys adding beer to soap, especially Lakefront Brewery beer. "Not only is it fun, but beer is super nourishing and gives the soap such a thick creamy lather without drying out your skin," she says.
Since the outbreak of COVID-19, Gilbert says her income has been deeply impacted because all of the craft shows, events, showers, weddings and gift shops have been canceled or shut down.
Gilbert's inspirations for her work come from gardens, riding bicycles and Milwaukee, where she has lived her entire life.
"I love everything about Milwaukee and under normal circumstances it is a great place to live as a maker," says Gilbert. "Milwaukee has such a strong following for local makers, I know we'll all bounce back but it will take a bit."
All of Gilbert's products are for sale on her website, and at the online stores at The Waxwing, Sparrow Collective, Brew City Apparel and Lakefront Brewery.
Molly Snyder started writing and publishing her work at the age 10, when her community newspaper printed her poem, "The Unicorn.” Since then, she's expanded beyond the subject of mythical creatures and written in many different mediums but, nearest and dearest to her heart, thousands of articles for OnMilwaukee.
Molly is a regular contributor to FOX6 News and numerous radio stations as well as the co-host of "Dandelions: A Podcast For Women.” She's received five Milwaukee Press Club Awards, served as the Pfister Narrator and is the Wisconsin State Fair’s Celebrity Cream Puff Eating Champion of 2019.
