The coronavirus pandemic has changed our everyday life, but it doesn't need to change who we are. So, in addition to our ongoing coverage of the coronavirus, OnMilwaukee will continue to report on cool, fun, inspiring and strange stories from our city and beyond. Stay safe, stay healthy, stay informed and stay joyful. We're all in this together. #InThisTogetherMKE

Malachi Schmidt is an 18-year-old savant artist who lives in Fond du Lac with family, including his mom, recently-profiled artist, Nina Trepanier-Schmidt.

Schmidt's one-of-a-kind style of drawing and painting is abstract and yet captures the essence of his subjects, which range from commissioned pet portraits to influential people in history.

His experience growing up with autism gives him a unique perspective and voice that comes through his art in an unmistakable style. "I am inspired by comic book art and animated films like 'Into the Spiderverse' and other artist's work, like Van Gogh (above) and Picasso,'" says Schmidt.

Schmidt has participated in art walks, farmers markets and displays his work at Riverwalk Art Center as well as Gallery and Frame Shop where he is employed.

Schmidt has sold his work all over the country, and particularly enjoys doing commissions for custom portraits of people and pets.

"I use drawing as a way to connect with people, and create my own world. Everything is shape, everything is color," says Schmidt.

Malachi Schmidt has a small art business, Art By Malachi, and his work is for sale through Facebook and Instagram. He also sells T-shirts with his images here.
