Season's eatings! The weather may be getting colder, but Dining Month on OnMilwaukee is just cooking up, dishing out your winning picks in this year's Best of Dining poll. We had been to Apple Holler in Sturtevant to pick apples and pumpkins, for a hay ride and a pony ride and to meander through the corn maze, but until this weekend, we had never visited the Apple Holler restaurant.

The restaurant building also includes a gift shop and bakery / grocery store so guests can grab items to go like apples, apple pie, apple cider donuts, caramel apples and cheese curds. But sitting down in the restaurant, we found, is even more of a treat.

The decor is exactly what a "home cookin’" all-American apple pie restaurant should be, complete with red-and-white-checkered tablecloths, a warm fireplace and country-cute decorations.

The menu features limited (but not too limited) quantities of food prepared fresh the same day. All of the meals come with made-from-scratch cornbread and homemade honey apple butter. 

The hot apple cider was tart and slightly sweet and some of the best – if not the best – we've ever had. The apple lemonade was also both unique and delicious.

High points of the menu include an applewood smoked pig sandwich, a fish fry, BBQ ribs, a slow-roasted turkey dinner, "pig tail" mac 'n' cheese, grilled avocado veggie sandwich and five kinds of pie: apple, Dutch apple, apple peach, caramel apple or Door county cherry. The pie is served warm with whipped cream, if you want it.

The portions are perfect – plenty of food to fill up without being ridiculously large. All of the food taste straight outta the kitchen and made with care. We particularly appreciated the un-perfect presentation – much like you’d receive at home – and the warm, friendly service from our server, Barbara.

The side options are particularly appealing and also made from scratch: warm cinnamon apples, coleslaw, applewood smoked baked sweet potato, vegetable of the day, mashed potatoes, French fries, onion strings, sweet potato casserole, potato pancakes, mac 'n' cheese, apple bread stuffing, cranberry orange relish or a slice of pie.

The entrees come with one or two side options and range in price from $10 to $17. The restaurant serves breakfast and lunch weekdays and breakfast, lunch and dinner on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, Apple Holler also serves dinner but closes at 5 p.m. We went for a late lunch / early dinner on a Sunday and will definitely be back to try the breakfast.

After our meal, we grabbed a couple of pumpkins and donuts – listened to live reggae music – and then piled back into our car and were home within 25 minutes. ’Twas a lovely autumnal afternoon with lots of apples and not a second of hollering.

The Apple Holler Restaurant hours are Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
