When Jan Seybold read an online announcement that the Fine Living Network was looking for vacation-bound women for their new reality television show, "All-Girl Getaways," she decided to apply.

Seybold, who lives in Wauwatosa and manages a salon in Brookfield, travels every year with a few female friends who own salons in various parts of the country. In 2006, the ladies planned an adventure to New York City, and it piqued the interest of the producers of "All-Girl Getaways."

"After reading the application, the production people said many applicants were planning a pampering type weekend at a spa, and they thought it was a nice twist that we wanted to get AWAY from our salon / spas," says Seybold.  "They also liked the fact that it was my 50th birthday, and we had picked a great destination to celebrate."

Kris Carpenter, owner of Sanctuary Salon in Montana, Mary Swank, who owns Simply Swank in Ohio and Cindy Monten, owner of Salon Monten in Minnesota, attended the adventure, along with Seybold's  29-year-old daughter, Angela Johnstad.

"The producers thought it was funny that I invited my daughter along to be our ‘chaperone’ and tour guide," says Seybold.

Johnstad, who currently resides in Bay View, lived in New York City for a few years. Now, she is the business administrator for Seybold’s salon, called Carenza Color, as well as a figure skating coach and a member of the Brew City Bruisers Roller Girls.

In summer 2006, Seybold e-mailed her application, photos and essay on friendship to the Fine Living Network. She was picked for the show in January 2007. It was shot in March 2007, and airs on May 14, 2008.

"The experience was really a lot of fun.  It was interesting to see what went into the production,"; says Seybold. "We arrived on a Friday morning and pretty much had the camera crews following us every day and into the evening through Sunday night."

Seybold says the show was shot out of sequence.

"As soon as we arrived in New York City, we put on our pjs for a 'pajama party' in the hotel suite and they sent up complimentary wine, cheese and crackers so we could have a little pretend party," she says.

The Fine Living TV Network  (Channel 133 on Time Warner Cable in Milwaukee) is the first television network that strives to help people find the most rewarding ways to spend their time and money. "All-Girl Getaways," hosted by Stephanie Oswald, shows how women plan and enjoy their all-girl escapes.

Although the women provided input for their travel agenda, the producers scheduled most of their destinations. However, this didn’t bother Seybold, who valued the experience of taping a TV show and the opportunity to feel like a celebrity for a couple of days.

"It was a blast, and we felt like rock stars having a camera, sound man and production people following us everywhere,"she says.
