The Becky Werner Foundation will observe World Meningitis Day this Saturday with a 5K run/walk April 21 at the lakefront campus of Concordia University Wisconsin.

Registration will begin at 9 a.m. and the walk will start at 9:30. The registration fee is $20 and includes a T-shirt and complimentary food and drink. Students can walk for $12 and children ages 5-10 can walk for $8. Children 4 and under are free.

The foundation was established by the family of college student Becky Werner, who died suddenly at the age of 20 in 2004 from the effects of undiagnosed meningitis.

The foundation has since donated over $58,000 to the Medical College of Wisconsin for meningitis research and provides community outreach in the form of free school presentations and financial assistance to families dealing with the aftermath of the disease. The foundation also promotes early detection and information about vaccines.
